When the time comes to replace your kitchen furniture it is an exciting and involved process. In fact as you probably haven’t created a new kitchen many times in the past, it can be a bit of a challenge to get it right. Chances are you know what you don’t want rather than what you do want. If your house is a new build you are probably faced with a blank canvas and the traditional kitchen styles offered by the house builder is all your likely to have on offer. If you have a kitchen already there, its hard to imagine another way for your new kitchen to be. So how do you go about getting the best kitchen for you and your family, whatever your budget?
Firstly, its a great idea to really look closely at how you use your kitchen. Do you love to cook? Do you have children and if so how old are they? How does this affect the way you spend time in the kitchen? Perhaps you love entertaining guests. Do you find that you spend most of your time in the kitchen? If you do, you may want to make your kitchen more of an integral living area in your home. Do you have enough space to do this. If not, can you sacrifice an interior wall to bring your living room and kitchen together, fully or partially?

Once you have an idea of how much space you have to work with now is the time to get the tape measure out!Now you know what you want and the space you have to create your ideal kitchen. The next step is to get a professional eye to assess your needs and offer advice. This could be anyone who works in design, from an architect to an interior designer or simply someone who designs and sells fitted kitchens. Go to a few stores and get at least three people to assess your project for you. Tell them your needs and your limits in space and see what they come up with. A range of expert opinions will generate a lot of fresh ideas and give you a new perspective on your space and how best to use it.

Another fun thing to do is to visit the Home Depot website and use their room visualiser to help you coordinate colours and materials for your kitchen.

If you are on a budget it is best not to make the mistake of simply choosing the cheapest option. You may be surprised at what a smaller retailer can offer in the way of price and quality. Go for stock cupboards so you can upgrade with ideas that will make your kitchen best suited to your lifestyle. If you have a strong idea about the style you like you can get stock size cabinets with a range of colours and finishes to suit your taste. Like your bedroom furniture, a kitchen says a lot about you and how you spend your time in it. So it is important to get it right.
