It’s Not Just the Ceiling Lights: Making a Good Lighting Scheme Great.

by admin on July 22, 2010

The best homes and interiors magazines show us all how to do it yet, so many people are too scared to try their hand at lighting design when remodeling a room. Ironically, this is one of the best ways to make your decorating and design efforts stand out. Never forget the lighting scheme. Unlike furniture and paint, a good lighting scheme will never look dated or need replacing.

“Of course its about ceiling lights!”

Yes, ceiling lighting is a really important part of the scheme. They are going to be the ambient lighting in your room. The beautiful thing about ceiling lights is their versatility. If your room is small or low ceilinged, flush mount cieling lights are the best solution. Not only do the mimc daylight but they are discreet and can be directed to shine where directed. In a small room, flush mount ceiling lights in the corners make the room look bigger.

If you have a period property, you will likely have higher ceilings. This is where pendant ceiling lights come in to their own. They are both practical and extremely decorative in their own right. You can choose from a wide range of fabulous lightshades or aim for a colonial look with a ceiling light and fan or tiffany style ceiling light fixture.

If you really want to make a dramatic effect a chandelier looks amazing especially in the hallway where guests will be wowed! Chandeliers are not great for creating bright conditions though so be sure to use extra lighting. Recessed spotlights directed on to the chandelier, increase reflect light from the crystal and improve light levels in an understated way that further enhances the look of your lighting feature. In recent years chandeliers have become very popular again and many designs are out there. You can find modern designed chandeliers for $10,000 or simplified, scaled down versions small enough for the spare loo!

So what other elements make up a good scheme? Here are a few ideas. Instead of one lamp sitting on a side table, create a small group of three lamps together, different sizes and shapes. Instead of plugging them into the sockets, get an electrician to wire them in for you. You can get a low voltage dimmer switch and use them as you would a wall light. Use floor lights to wash the walls with. You can buy two or three and line them up to create dramatic panels of light along a wall or place one behind a beautiful house plant and use it as a focal point in the room

Instead of bedside table lamps, two low hung pendant ceiling lights offer ambient lighting without cluttering up your bedroom furniture. With some imagination it really is quite easy to create drama and ambience in your lighting scheme.
