Four Essential Steps for Buying Bedroom Furniture

by admin on June 27, 2010

Buying bedroom furniture is one of the more fun activities in house remodelling. But get it wrong and you could make some very expensive mistakes. So what are the pitfalls of kitting out your bedroom, and how can they be avoided?

Consider the space:

Sadly the most common mistake. Imagine finding the perfect set of bedroom furniture. You fall in love with it but when it arrives, it’s too big!

Make sure before you even look for your perfect match that you know how much space you have to put it in. Measure the room. If you have furniture already in there, measure this as well to give you an accurate indication of how big your bed, wardrobe etc. need to be. Then you can avoid the heartache of falling in love with the perfect bedroom furniture set only to find it doesn’t fit your needs.

Consider access to the bedroom:

Do you live in an apartment? Is it on the 4th Floor? Is your house furnished with wide interiors or lots of rooms divided by narrow corridors? These are things to ask when considering what kind of bed or wardrobe to buy. You may be lucky enough to have a large living area with good access. You will have a wider choice of bedroom furniture. If not, the best option is the flat pack bedroom set or fitted bedroom furniture.

Don’t worry this is not a poor option. These days, so many people live in smaller spaces that the range of choice in flat pack furniture is excellent. Whether you are looking for contemporary styled modern bedroom furniture or more traditional pine bedroom furniture, there is something to suit all tastes in the flat pack range.

Consider your needs:

A bed should be 5-6 inches longer than the person who sleeps in it. Make sure your bed has enough room for you to sleep comfortably lengthwise. If buying as a couple, and you afford the space, get a king size bed. It will afford you both a much better night’s sleep. For mattresses, remember too hard a mattress, and you may not get much sleep if your partner is a restless sleeper! Too soft and you will get a bad back. The best mattress you can afford is a great investment and should last you many years to come.

Consider your storage requirements:

Make sure the storage units in you bedroom set are adequate for your needs. It might be worth a de-clutter of your old clothes before you start!

As you can see the before even thinking about colour schemes or modern furniture versus traditional styles, it is very important to analyse your needs and the practicalities of buying a new bedroom furniture set. Get these things right and your bedroom furniture will serve you well for years to come.
