Buying Kids Bedding: What You Should Know

by admin on July 2, 2010

When your child has grown too large for their cot and needs a new bed, the temptation may be to just by a single bed and regular adult bedding. After all your child will be using this bed and bedding for the next 15 to 18 years or so. They might as well have something that will last into their adolesence right?

Wrong! Especially when it comes to your kids bedding. Your child’s health and ability to sleep rests on the state of their bed. So what other things should be considered when buying childrens bedding?

Bed size

A normal adult size single bed is actually quite a shock for a small child to adjust to. Their comfortable and familiar cot, with its high sides has been a safe haven for all of their lives. So being placed in an adults bed will likely make them feel exposed and swamped by the new surroundings. Not very conducive to a good nights sleep. Kids bedroom furniture is more child-friendly, easier to adjust to and if the bed is a low built model, your child can safely climb in and out, even at a young age. Some childrens bed manufacturers even offer a service that adjusts the child’s bed to an adult size frame when needed. Childrens beds come in a range of styles and sizes to suit all rooms and budgets so find the right kids bed should be easy.

Mattress

An adult mattress is designed for adult weight. So what may seem comfortable to you will be far too firm for a child. Special mattresses are made for children so if your child is having trouble sleeping this might be another reason. Investing in a specially designed mattress may mean a good nights sleep for the whole family.

Bedding

Due to their growing needs, a child’s metabolic rate is a lot faster than an adults. The result, a much higher body temperature, especially at night. Putting a child under an adult’s comforter will make them far too hot. When thinking about kids bedding sets, a 4 tog comforter duvet should be sufficient for most children. Of course ask them if they are too hot or cold and this can be adjusted. In winter a blanket on top of the comforter should suffice.

So finding the right bedding for kids, when they are ready to move into their new bed is a really important factor in raising your child. It will ensure a smoother transition from cot to bed and make sure that you get a better night’s sleep too!
